The Air Force Village Foundation was founded in 1964 to fulfill the vision of the leaders in the Air force Officers' Wives' Club of Washington D.C. With the support and leadership of Mrs. Curtis LeMay, Miss Jackie Cochran, Major General Thomas C. Musgrave, Jr., USAF (Retired), Air Force leadership, and others, the Foundation developed a plan to provide a home and financial assistance (via the widows' Fellowship Trust) for retired Air Force officers' widows who had no other means of support. At that time, many widows were left without social security and their survivor's benefits were minimal, if not non-existent. Air Force Village opened in San Antonio in 1970 on 15 acres donated by Ray Ellison, a prominent local homebuilder. Since then, two established retirement communities have evolved which continue their original charitable mission, but additionally, they serve so many others.
Air Force Village I was the first retirement community in the nation that offered care and services for retired military officers and their dependents. It was the first military related retirement community to be accredited by the Continuing Care Accreditation Commission, achieving that milestone in 1987. Also, it was the first health care facility in San Antonio to embrace the Eden Principles of health care operations to create home-like environments in skilled nursing care centers.
Both communities are accredited and feature a full continuum of care: independent living, home health care in apartments, assisted living to include specialized care in Freedom House for those suffering from Alzheimer's disease, and skilled nursing care. |
Air Force Village I was incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation, IRS Code Section 501(c)(3), in Washington D.C. Its purpose is to provide widows/widowers of honorably separated and retired officers of the Uniformed services and their spouses with dignified, appropriate, and cost-effective living options. Through contributions from Officers’ Wives/Spouses Clubs, the Air Force Assistance Fund, individuals, corporations, and foundations, over $9.5 million has been allocated to widows of career Air Force Officers since the founding of the Villages. Additionally, capital campaigns have assisted in building the High Rise at Village I, the Health Care Centers at both Villages, the Chapel at Village II and Freedom House, the Alzheimer’s Care and Research Center adjacent to Village II.
While past successes have been numerous and significant, the Villages must look to the future. The Villages must be prepared to meet the needs of future residents whose expectations may differ from those of current residents. Also, the Villages must remain strong financially, notwithstanding rising costs of services, while remaining competitive in both the CCRC industry and in the capital markets.
The Village Vision 2005-2009 outlines the Strategic Plan to guide the Air Force Villages through the next several years. |
