Air Force Village Redevelopment Project
Will Expand Options for Retired Military Officers

Signs of progress abound at both Air Force Village campuses on San Antonio's far west side, where construction is underway on new residences, town centers, dining venues and health care facilities. Through its $145 million strategic redevelopment project entitled, "Building on Success," Air Force Village is expanding amenities and options to meet the expectations of retirees today and into the future.

Attractive new entrances greet visitors to Air Force Village I and II - a symbol of the modernization effort that is revitalizing these distinctive Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC). More than 1200 retired officers representing all branches of the U.S. military and their spouses, widows and widowers reside at AFV I and II.

AFV President and CEO, Major General M. Gary Alkire, USAF, Ret., says, "The new generation of retired military officers is looking for retirement communities that offer choices. They want creative architecture and quality construction in well-appointed apartments and spacious homes. They want to dine at their convenience, in venues that range from casual to elegant. That's what they'll find at Air Force Village ... and more."

With more than one-third of phase one construction completed, all projects are on schedule. Among the new living options is The Hill Residences at Air Force Village I. This fall, the first residents will begin moving to these unique townhome-style residences that are staggered on a hillside with spectacular views from private terraces. Seven floor plans will enable residents to customize their homes to accommodate their furnishings and personal lifestyles. In the first phase, three complexes of 12 residences each are being built.

Charter residents already have begun moving into the stylish, spacious ranch-style residences in The Gardens at Air Force Village II. This planned neighborhood invites outdoor living with professional landscaping and generous use of mature native trees and plants. Beautiful models are open for viewing and five homes are under construction with 13 more to be built in the next year.

At Village II, residents are enjoying the new urban village atmosphere at the town center, which includes the casual Café Bistro, library, computer center and lounge area. A similar town center with a friendly pub is under construction on the ground floor of the high-rise apartment building at AFV I, to be completed by February, 2011.

Residents and their guests will be able to enjoy fine dining, dancing and a panoramic view in the penthouse of the high-rise at AFV I when the Sky Lounge opens in February, 2011. This destination dining spot promises to be a focal point for both Villages.

A bold new approach to health care at The Mission will afford residents the privacy, dignity, comfort and amenities they deserve. Apartment-style residences situated in a household model will create the atmosphere of a true family home without the traditional look and feel of a nursing home. Residents may begin moving to The Mission in April, 2011.

Gen Alkire notes, "In a city that has a strong and valued military presence, it is fitting that Air Force Village invites officers to remain in San Antonio after retirement. For those who were once stationed at one of San Antonio's distinguished military installations and settled elsewhere upon retirement, Air Force Village offers an opportunity to return. All who reside at Air Force Village find an atmosphere of tradition and patriotism that binds residents together in shared camaraderie that is uniquely Air Force Village."
