As a leader in the life care retirement industry, the Air Force Villages established the Alzheimer's Care and Research Center Foundation in 1993. The Foundation is dedicated to the sponsorship and support of research into the cause, care and cure of persons with Alzheimer's and related dementias. Freedom House, a stand alone, state of the art facility opened its doors in August 1998 expressly for this purpose.

Freedom House, a $10.0 million care and research facility adjacent to Air Force Village II, is being built in three phases. Phases I and II care for 54 residents, as well as having the capability to provide daycare services.  Once Phase III is completed, Freedom House will provide care for 86 residents in all stages of dementia. The facility will be constructed as contributed funds are available.

PHASE I

The first phase includes care facilities for 27 people suffering from Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. It is a modern, home-like residence that includes an assessment clinic, library, offices, and a children's daycare center. Three residences—Spaatz, Twining, and Vandenberg—named for the first three Air Force Chiefs of Staff, are home for 9 residents each.  Personal care and personal activities are central to the care of each resident in a secure, comfortable environment.

PHASE II

The expansion of Freedom House is complete thanks to the generosity of our donors. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was held in June 2003 with three new households ready for occupancy. Twenty-seven more residents will soon be living in Freedom House and will receive the loving, home-like care for which Freedom House has become known. The three additional households will allow a total of 54 residents to call Freedom House their home. A central kitchen, on-site laundry, a larger multipurpose room and chapel are incorporated into the new addition to increase efficiencies of operations. A courtyard has been created in between Phases I and II and features a gazebo, a large children’s playground for the on-site child-care center, and walkways paved with engraved pavers.

PHASE III

The vision of Freedom House is to have a specially designed facility to care for the elderly living with Alzheimer’s through all phases of the disease. Phase III is projected to care for those in the end stages of Alzheimer’s or related dementia. The design and capacity of Phase III to meet the resident’s need for medically licensed care and hospice care is being evaluated and designed based on the experience of operating Phases I and II. Preliminary estimates are that Phase III design will be defined before the year 2005.
